Base on damage mechanics and fracture mechanism of material, damage and fracture law of common glass plate at high strain rate is analyzed. Based on the balance between the strain energy coupled with damage and the fracture surface energy, a formula for predicting glass fragment size at different strain rate is derived. The model can provides a direct and quantitative method to determine the average fragment size generated by crack coalescence in glass, and the number of glass fragments can be obtained. The discussions about the effect of glass panel size and the critical strain on the glass fragment size are given.
