As one of the important structural parameters of ball bearings, the contact angle has a great impact on load distribution, motion, lubrication, friction et al. of bearing components. Based on the simplification of coupled relations of variables as deriving the inertia force, a simplified Jones-Harris method(SJHM) used to research the characteristics of contact angle in ball bearings is put forward. The disadvantage of direct iteration method to get the influence of inner-race deflection angle on contact angle is overcome through giving the deflection angle in advance. The validity of SJHM is verified by the calculating example of b218 bearing. Then, the influences of multiple factors on contact angle are analyzed. Results manifest: the centrifugal force has a much greater impact on the inner and outer contact angles than gyroscopic moment; the contact angle is very sensitive to the variations of inner-race deflection angle and the inner-race deflection angle can make the inner and outer contact angle of the same rolling element increase or decrease simultaneously. Key words: ball bearings; contact angle; simplified Jones-Harris method; inner-race deflection angle; inertia force
