Performance-based plastic design method for steel concentrically braced frames
This paper presents a performance-based plastic design (PBPD) methodology for the design of steel concentrically braced frames (CBFs). The design base shear is obtained based on energy-work balance using pre-selected target drift and yield mechanism. Plastic design is performed to detail the bracing members connections in order to achieve the targeted yield mechanism and behavior. The method has been successfully applied to a six-storey steel concentrically braced frame, and validated by inelastic dynamic analyses. In the cases, the story drifts are well within the target values, thus meeting the desired performance objectives. The addressed method herein can form a basis for the performance-based plastic design of steel concentrically braced frames.
