Experimental Studies of Energy Absorber Filled with Aluminum Foam on the Thin-walled Metal Tube’s Plastic Deformation
Abstract: Energy absorption characteristic of energy absorber filled with aluminum foam on the thin-wall metal tube’s plastic deformation under quasi-static is studied by test method. First, the axial compression tests of aluminum foam, shock absorber with thin-wall metal tube’s plastic deformation and shock absorber with aluminum foam filled on thin-wall metal tube’s plastic deformation are carried out. Based upon the test result, the energy absorption characteristic of energy absorber with aluminum foam filled on thin-wall metal tube’s plastic deformation are analyzed, and compared with that of aluminum foam and energy absorber with thin-wall metal tube’s plastic deformation. It shows that, aluminum foam filling can greatly increase the energy adsorption abilities of the thin-wall metal sections. Compared with the non-filled structures, aluminum foam filled structures need less mass and volume to absorb the specified energy.
