Abstract

Abstract: An analytical solution was presented for vertical linearly tensioned riser without flexural rigidity.
Less than 20 modes, natural frequencies and mode shapes of the analytical solution are in agree with those of
Shear7 program. More than 20 modes, the difference of two methods increases with mode number, so flexuralrigidity can’t be neglected. An equivalent vertical straight riser is defined to have approximate parameters of SCR
with catenary equation. VIV response of SCR is obtained through predicting VIV response of the equivalent riser
with Shear7 program. It was found that the shape of SCR’s static displacement combined with that of equivalent
riser’s RMS displacement look like a saw blade.
