Abstract

The dynamic behaviors of a uniform slender beam carrying one or two lumped masses with both the translational and rotary inertias are studied. At the same time, the frequency sensitivity is analyzed with respect to the position of the lumped mass attachment, and a correct expression of the sensitivity is obtained. Numerical results show that the rotary inertia of a lumped mass affects the natural frequencies, mode shapes and the design sensitivities more noticeably. Ignoring the rotary inertia, in some cases, may lead to inaccurate results in the beam vibration analysis.
