Abstract

A new damage detection method based on the Hilbert marginal spectrum is proposed. In this method the acceleration response of measuring points are decomposed by empirical mode decomposition method at first, the Hilbert transform is performed for the intrinsic mode function of the response to obtain Hilbert marginal spectrum, then the characteristic amplitude is defined, and the relative change of the characteristic amplitude at the same response measuring point between intact and damaged structures is used to calculate the damage index. The proposed method is validated using damage detection numerical simulation and model tests of a shear frame structure. The results show that the proposed method can detect and locate the damage with good accuracy.
