Abstract

Based on the modal superposition technique, the dynamic equations of the coupled vehicle-bridge system are established with generalized coordinates when the vehicle loads traverse the bridge with varying speed, and a computer code is worked out. The proposed framework is then applied to the analysis of a railway bridge with 3×32 m multi-span simply-supported box-girders. The distribution curve of the bridge maximum deflection versus vehicle speed was drawn based on the calculated data. To study the influence of the speed variation on the bridge deflection, a further calculation was performed on selected typical values on the curve. The influences of speed varying of loads on the peak bridge deflections and their varying tendency were explained in detail by the vehicle-bridge system resonance mechanism.
