Abstract

Vibrations of long-span cable-stayed bridges and their approach bridges are usually coupled under severe earthquake excitations. Longitudinal coupling motion may cause pounding or even falling down of main girders. The analysis is conducted on a model for a cable-stayed bridge. The pounding effects at the movement joints are discussed and the influences of different impact stiffness are evaluated. The effects of some parameters including period ratio of adjacent bridge segments and initial gap size at expansion joints are investigated. The results show that pounding effects of bridges approach are greater.
