Abstract

A nonlinear finite element equation of iced bundled conductor, in which the geometric nonlinearity of galloping of the iced conductor and the nonlinearity of wind load, is developed by means of the virtual work principle. A three–node isoparametric cable element with three translational and one torsional degrees-of-freedom is employed to discretize the bundled conductor and the two-node Euler-Bernoulli beam elements are used to simulate the spacers. The Newmark time integration and Newton-Raphson nonlinear iteration strategy are used to solve the nonlinear finite element equation. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the efficiency of the presented method and the developed finite element program. The aerodynamic coefficients of iced quad-bundled conductor determined by wind tunnel test are presented. Furthermore, the galloping of the quad-bundled conductors with different span lengths is numerically investigated. The obtained results provide some references for the development of anti-galloping technology. The method presented in this paper is suitable for the study of galloping of any bundled conductor.
