Abstract

A method considering strain rate effect approximately in nonlinear time-history analysis is proposed in the paper: First, perform nonlinear time-history analysis of the structure without considering strain rate effect. Second, calculate the average strain rates at the important positions in the previous 1/4 cycle corresponding to the maximun top displacement, then the model can be modified according to the average strain rates of the important positions. Finally, perform nonlinear time-history analysis of the structure for the second time. The mechanical explanation of the method is given in the paper. Furthermore, numerical simulation is performed to prove the method. The result shows that the method is precise enough to be an effective method to consider strain rate effect in nonlinear time-history analysis.
