Abstract

Vertical microstructure turbulence profiler (referred to as vertical profiler) is the most effective measurement platform to obtain shear flow in the ocean and is very important for marine science research. This paper first briefly introduces the developments of vertical profiler at home and abroad. According to the principle of vertical profiler and results of the sea tests, the factors affecting profiler measurement accuracy are summarized. Then the sources of vibration in vertical profiler and vibration reduction methods are focused. Based on the analysis of the sources of vibration in vertical profiler, a new designing scheme of the vertical profiler is proposed, i.e., the shear probe is equipped around the center of the profiler’s oscillation, to reduce the effect of profiler vibration on its measurement accuracy. Results of the theoretical analysis and the computational fluid dynamics simulation indicate that the proposed shear probe loading method can effectively reduce the influence of profiler vibration on its measurement accuracy.
