Abstract

When supercavitating projectile moves at high speed, the periodic impacts (“tail-slap”) with interior surface of the cavity generally occur, and the motion of projectile will be influenced by the effect of fluid compressibility. By considering the coupling effect of fluid and structure, the dynamic equation of supercaviting projectile with no constraints has been established and solved by finite element method. The dynamic behaviour of supercavitating projectile operating in tail-slap conditions is obtained. Furthermore, the influence of Mach number has been investigated. The results show: in subsonic flows, the amplitude and cycle of elastic displacement responses increase by the effect of fluid compressibility; with the increment of Mach number, the influence of fluid compressibility on structural elastic displacement responses is more and more apparent.
