Abstract

Concrete is a typical rate-sensitive material. According to different strain rate, the compressive behaviour of plain concrete column is affected obviously. In this paper, axial compressive tests for plain concrete columns with different strain rate (10-5/s10-2/s) were carried out. The rate effect on constitutive relation, compressive strength, elastic modulus, peak strain, energy absorption capacity and failure mechanism of concrete columns were studied. The effect of stiffness of machine and inertia effect on experimental results were also discussed. The experimental results show that the compressive strength was increased by 7.45%, 19.51%, 29.23%, when the strain rate was 10-4/s, 10-3/s, 10-2/s, compared with quasi-static strain rate 10-5/s. The variation of elastic modulus could be neglected while the peak strain, energy absorption were increased obviously. In addition, the use of rigid components improved the stability of strain rate and the effect of inertia effect on experimental results could be neglected.
