Experimental Validation of the Hybrid Testing System Based on Finite Element Software OpenSEES

Abstract

The hybrid testing method has been used world widely for accurately and economically disclosing the seismic performance of structures, and plays more and more important roles on seismic investigation in nowadays. However, the numerical substructures are normally simulated with simple linear models, and the accuracy of testing results will be greatly reduced if serious elastic-plastic deformation occurs in the structures when suffering a strong earthquake. For solving this problem, this paper simulates numerical substructures by using the professional finite element software OpenSEES. This paper proposes the hybrid testing system by using the finite element software OpenSEES, interface software OpenFresco, and experimental control dSPACE, and validates the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed hybrid testing system numerically and experimentally. It is shown that the OpenSEES, OpenFresco, and dSPACE can work well together to conduct hybrid tests, and the proposed hybrid testing system behaviors excellent performance in terms of stability and accuracy.
