Abstract

Based on the effectiveness of the method of finite elements used in this paper, the dynamic responses of two different hollow cylinders with equal mass are studied using LS-DYNA under three different blast loading. One has sandwich wall with A3 steel face-sheets and close-celled aluminum foam core, and the other has monolithic A3 steel wall. In addition, the blast resistance of five different sandwich-walled hollow cylinders are also studied. The results demonstrate that the sandwich-walled hollow cylinder is superior to the hollow cylinder with monolithic solid wall under the same blast loading, whether in terms of deformation or energy absorption. For sandwich-walled hollow cylinder, the thickness of inner face-sheet should not bigger than that of outer face-sheet, and only in this condition can reduce the global deformation of sandwich-walled hollow cylinder and take the advantage of the energy absorption of foam core.
