Abstract

The simplified one-dimensional Haroun-Housner model was used widely in the seismic isolation study of storage tank. A simplified three-dimensional mechanical model was established on the basis of added mass method, which considered liquid convective and impulsive mass. Validity of the model was verified by dynamic responses of Haroun-Housner model and fluid-solid coupling model under same seismic excitations. Using the model, nonlinear seismic response of a large base-isolated storage tank with fixed roof and friction pendulum system bearing was studied systematically under different site conditions. Results showed that FPS isolation bearing was effective in controlling the seismic response of storage tank, which decreased liquid impulsive motion and avoided the buckling failure of tank shell, but increased convective motion.
