Abstract

A new finite element model updating method is presented using modal frequency and effective modal mass as objective residues. The effective modal mass can not only provide a method for judging the significance of a vibration in structural dynamics, but also can provide more useful information for model updating. The process of model updating based on sensitivity analysis and the concept of effective modal mass are introduced, while the effective modal mass sensitivities with respect to physical parameters are derived. The simulation results that all updated parameters are returned to the objective values and the root mean square (RMS) errors for both the modal frequency and the effective mass are less than 4% even taking into account the 5% Gaussian white noise on the estimated modal parameters. The study demonstrates that the finite element modal updating method using modal frequency and effective modal mass is feasible and effective.
