Abstract

Modeling of the coupled vibration is the base for exploring vibration control. In the modeling process, frequency response functions (FRFs) of the shaft with a mass at one of its ends are calculated by the analytical method while FRFs of the reinforced hull structure are calculated by the finite element method (FEM). A frequency description model of the shaft-hull coupled system is obtained by synthesis of FRFs of the shaft and the hull structure, in which bearings are regarded as link units between substructures. In terms of the synthesized model, natural characteristics and their variation with parameters of the thrust bearing have been analyzed and feasibility of carrying out longitudinal vibration control on the shaft is discussed as well. Analysis results have shown that variation of the thrust bearing stiffness changes longitudinal vibration frequencies of the shafting system and thus has a significant influence on vibration transmission. Longitudinal vibration of the shaft causes not only longitudinal resonance in the hull structure but also lateral vibration in the shaft-hull coupled system. Furthermore, suppression of longitudinal vibration of the shaft is able to reduce vibration in the coupled system.
