Abstract

Thenaturalfrequencies,modesanddecrementcoefficientsofaKelvinviscoelasticTimoshenkobeam
withtwotypicalboundaryconditionsincludingclampedclamped and pinnedpinned sufferingaxialtension were
investigatedbyusingthecomplexmodalanalysisapproach.Theorthogonalityconditionsofmodefunctionswerederived
fromtheequationsofmotion.Theeffectsofsomeparameters,suchas,lengthtodepthratio,axialloadandcoefficientsof
viscoelasticityonthefrequencies,decrementcoefficientsandmodeswereexamined,respectively,whileotherparameters
werefixedinseveralnumericalexamples.Itwasshownthatthenaturalfrequenciesofthebeamgrowwithincreaseinaxial
tension,meanwhiletheamplitudesofthemodefunctionsdrop,thechangesofthedecrementcoefficientsarenotobvious.
Theeffectofincreaseinviscoelasticitycoefficientonthenaturalfrequenciesandtheamplitudesofthemodefunctionsis
smaller,butthedecrementcoefficientsgrowapparently.
