Abstract

Considering the relatively lower impact resistance of tubular joint used in engineering practice, it is generally reinforced by welding a collar plate to the chord tube at which it intersects with the brace tube. In the paper a drop weight setup was used to experimentally study the impact behaviors of the collar plate reinforced and unreinforced tubular T-joint. The failure modes and mechanism of deformational development of the two type of tubular T-joints were compared. The measured impact force, displacement and strain versus time history responses of the tubular joints were analyzed. Accordingly the impact resistant mechanism and energy transformation rule of reinforced tubular joint were discovered. The experimental research can offer a reliable test data and design suggestion to reasonably evaluate impact behaviors and establish rational strengthening methodology for this type of tubular joint.
