Abstract
The internal solitary wave, which brings in strong shear current and powerful impact, can pose a hazard to ocean engineering structures like offshore platforms and marine risers. However, there are few studies about the responses of marine risers under internal solitary wave. An investigation on the extreme response of top tensioned riser under internal solitary wave is presented in this paper. To describe the flow field induced by internal solitary wave, the KdV-mKdV equation was employed. The modified Morison formula was chosen to calculate the hydrodynamic force, and the Finite Element Method was adopted to estimate the extreme response of top tensioned riser under internal solitary wave in time domain. The influences of the internal wave amplitude, internal flow, top tension, elastic modulus and wall thickness on the riser extreme response were discussed. The results show that internal solitary wave may induce quite large displacement and stress in riser, and the load of internal solitary wave should be concerned in riser analysis.
