Abstract

Structural Modes are determined by stiffness and mass distribution of a certain building; they are usually used for estimation of earthquake or wind response. Field measurement of structural modes can help engineers to check their analysis results during design stage. Shanghai Global Financial Center is a 101 stories composite structure of reinforced concrete and steel with total height of 492 meters. Modes of two orthogonal horizontal and torsional directions are obtained by employing force-balanced accelerometers and data logger with very high resolution. Results show that the first natural period of the structure is as long as 6.7 second; the first two modal frequencies are very similar despite the quite difference of structural configuration in X and Y direction. Comments on test techniques and test results are presented.
