Abstract

This paper deals with the time-frequency analysis of a coupled bridge-vehicle system. The bridge is modeled as an Euler beam with breathing cracks. Two-axle vehicle is used to represent the vehicle. A coupled bridge-vehicle system is established using the finite element method, and Newmark direct integration is adopted to calculate the dynamic responses of the coupled system. The effect of the crack models on the dynamic response of the bridge is investigated. The HHT spectrum and HHT marginal spectrum of the dynamic response are obtained using the Hilbert-Huang transform. The results of time-frequency analysis indicate that complicated harmonic effect will appear due to the breathing effect of the cracks. And the time-frequency characteristics of the responses with different traffic flow are also compared. It can be concluded that traffic flow has an effect on breathing crack. The vibration of the bridge will be more intense and the energy of harmonics will increase when more and more vehicles move across the bridge.
