Abstract

In order to study the earthquake-induced pounding on bridge response, the calculation methods of impact stiffness for Kelvin model and Hertz-damp model have been theoretically derived based on equating the maximum pounding deformation calculated by the collinear impact model of two rods with the maximum pounding deformation calculated by the rigid-body impact model. Then the effectiveness of the proposed calculation methods is verified, respectively. The results of the study indicate that, the impact stiffness of Kelvin model calculated by the proposed method is obviously smaller than the axial stiffness of the shorter bridge girder, and this finding supports previous researchers’ comments which are obtained from the measured data. The results of the numerical analysis also indicate that the Hertz-damp model can give more precise pounding simulation results based on the proposed impact stiffness calculation method.
