Abstract

To make magnetorheological (MR) dampers be free from dependence on the external power supply, a self-powered MR damper control system combined with a rotary permanent magnet direct-current (DC) motor and a MR damper with low power requirement was integrated based on vibrational energy harvesting technology. Its feasibility, advantages as well as control mechanisms have been illustrated through experimental investigations. Both electrical properties of the energy harvesting motor and mechanical performances of the self-powered MR damper were tested. In addition, control mechanisms of passively operated self-powered MR dampers were quantitatively analyzed. It is found that self-powered MR dampers possess high feasibilities and excellent performances with characteristics of both velocity feedback control and off-and-towards-equilibrium control strategy.
