Abstract

Double layered targets and monolithic targets were normally impacted by ogival projectiles with the help of a gas gun to investigate the influence of air gap on the ballistic resistance and target failure model. Based on the result of impact tests, the residual velocity versus the initial velocity curves of the projectiles are constructed and ballistic limit velocities obtained. Experimental results show that: The ballistic resistance of monolithic is higher than that of double-layered plate with or without gap for ogival projectiles. The ballistic limit velocties of multi-layered gargets decrease with the increase of the number of layers for a given total thickness, . The ballistic resistance of spaced targets are little sensitive to the air gap size, the effect of gap on the ballistic limit decrease with the increase of velocity of pro-jectile.
