Abstract

The application of the explicit formula of dampers between adjacent structures under earthquake excitation is investigated, including the visco-elastic damper and the viscous fluid damper. Two control objectives are selected to minimize the vibration energy of the main structure and to minimize the vibration energy of both adjacent structures. In linear elastic state, the pseudo-excitation method is used to study the optimum parameters of dampers and the effect on the parameter value when the structural modal damping ratio and site conditions change. When two structures are in the elastic-plastic state under strong earthquake excitation, using the white-noise ground motion and several actual earthquake records, the appropriate parameters of dampers are obtained through extensive parametric studies, and compared with the theoretical values. The results show that, changes of the structural modal damping ratio and site conditions have little effect on the optimum parameters; the appropriate parameters of the dampers are nearly the same and relative close to the theoretical values; the conclusion is very beneficial for the use of explicit formula.
