Abstract

Passive particle damper with simple principle and well behavior is widely used for structure damping. In severe environment, high-frequency vibration of structure is easy excited and attenuation of oscilation with multi-mode is coupled because of the nonlinear character of particle damping. To reveal the mechanism of this phenomenon, model the cantilever with concentrate mass at free end by modal synthesis method and the motion of particle assembly by discrete element method. Then, semi-analytical model is established based on ball-wall model in multiscale theory. It’s indicated that particle damper is very effective for damping and the behavior of damper is related to mode of vibration through numerical analysis. When vibrations of multi-order modes exist simultaneously, comparing with one-mode oscilation, attenuation of low-order-mode amplitude is delayed, while attenuation of high-order-mode amplitude is fastened. It can be concluded that the equivalent damping ratio for one-mode vibration can’t represent the capacity of particle damping in complex vibration condition.
