Abstract

This paper considers the use of Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) algorithm in conjunction with modal strain energy method to solve the topological optimization problem for short cylindrical shell with constrained layer damping treatments. Furthermore, the independent grid filtering technique was used to obtain a regular optimized constrained layer damping layout. The topology optimization procedures was performed by using ansys parameter design language(APDL). The optimal topology layout of constrained layer damping was obtained for the short cylindrical shell with constrained damping layer treatment under the constraint of damping material consumption. Finally, theoretical results are verified by experimental study on the short cylindrical shell with optimal topology layout of constrained layer damping treatment. Results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed topology optimization method. A potential application in the layout optimization of constrained layer damping for engineering structures is thus demonstrated.
