Abstract

With a reduction of mean wind load and an increase of gust effect factor, the recent revision of Chinese “Load code for the design of building structures” has notable influence on the wind load which is crucial in transmission tower designs. Based on the theory of Stochastic Vibration, differences in calculation of gust effect between new code and old code are compared in this paper. Contrasive analysis of wind load on a series of 220kV four-circuit suspension towers is performed according to new code and old code. Effects of wind load, such as bending moments, leg forces and tower weights, are also calculated. It is found that the revised code leads to an increase of wind load on the tower and a decrease of that on the conductor. As combined effect, the new-code-to-old-code ratio of total wind load varies with category of the terrain, B(rural areas)>A>C>D(large city centers), and wind angle of attack, 0°(parallel to the conductor)>45°>60°>90°(normal to the conductor). Therefore, the revised code considerably increases bending moments, leg forces and weights of transmission towers usually constructed in B-category terrain.
