Abstract

By selecting 20 seismic waves that were used for incremental dynamic analysis, the damage degree of a 9 stories beam-column welded steel frame was compared in terms of inter-story drift angle and energy dissipation respectively as the global structural damage index. The results show that it would overestimate the structural collapse resistance capacity when considering inter-story drift angle as the global structural damage index, and the failure modes of structure would not be distinguished when considering energy dissipation only. To consider the first excursion damage failure and cumulative damage of the structure, an global damage model of structure based on the linear combination of two parameters including both inter-story drift and energy dissipation was proposed to avoid the disadvantage of single index. The global structure’s damage curve and fragility curve was compared when inter-story drift angle , energy dissipation,as well as proposed damage model was taken as global structural damage index by defining four limit states of damage and results indicate that the proposed method would more reasonable evaluate the damage of a steel structure under strong earthquakes.
