Abstract

Based on the controllability and observability concepts in control theory, and taking the isolation devices as the passive controller which input the passive control forces to the structures, this paper solves the problem of optimal placement of isolators as the problem of optimal placement of controllers. A placement index that can reflect the controllability and observability is constructed, and problems regarding the normalization and correlation of the index are studied. The methodology is then applied to a benchmark problem example, for which the indices of the isolators’ locations are calculated, and 13 optimal locations are determined. This methodology provides a new view for similar optimal problems in civil engineering.
