Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the design method of protection device for single bridge pier in order to against 1 000 DWT ship collision. The nonlinear FE analysis is used to simulate the collision procedure between the Yangtze River standard bulk carriers and the steel box of bridge protection. The influences of slope angle of the protection device bow on the absorption characteristics and the collision force are investigated. The results of analysis could be as reference for designing steel box of bridge protection against ships collision. The Boltzmann equation is adopted to fit the relationship between velocities of the striking ship and collision forces of bridge pier, which could be used for rapid assessment of collision forces in the primary design for this kind of protection device.
