Study on impact response and design method of reinforced concrete beams

Abstract

In order to research the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under impact loading, drop hammer tests were carried on 4 RC beams and experimental variables were impact mass and impact velocity. Impact force, reaction force and mid-span deflection were measured. The crack propagation was recorded using a high-speed video camera. The specimens show two different failure patterns of the beam-hammer contact zone. With impact velocity increasing and impact mass decreasing, proportion of the beam overall deformation energy translated from the hammer kinetic energy reduce, more energy is consumed by local damage of the beam-hammer contact zone. Based on this and previous experimental results, an empirical formula for estimating maximum deflection of the beam is derived. The formula considers influence of the impact mass and its accuracy is improved.
