Experimental investigation into dynamic buckling of thin rectangular plates subjected to in-plane impact

Abstract

The dynamic buckling of thin rectangular plates subjected to in-plane impact is investigated in this paper experimentally. The result indicates that the load in the plate can increase after buckling and postbuckling strength exists in the plate. The critical buckling length of the thin rectangular plate is obtained by recording the buckling time. The experimental model is also studied with analytical method. By comparing this two kinds of results we know that partial buckling occurs in the thin rectangular plate when the compression wave propagates a certain distance. The critical buckling length obtained in the experiment shows reasonable agreement with the analytical calculation result.
