Damage detection method for beam structures based on improved Wavelet Packet energy

Abstract

The signal of structural nodal curvature is firstly decomposed into different modals through wavelet packet transform. Then, the modal response, which have the larger energy than the other modal, is selected to calculate the damage index, so as to improve the noise robustness of the method. To further reduce the effection of noise, the number that damage index exceeded the warning line is counted to detect the damage of structure. The proposed approach is verified to be valid through numerical simulation and experiment of damage detection for a simply supported beam model with several different damage cases. The results indicate that the method can identify small structure damages accurately, while the noise proportion is up to 10%.
