Abstract

The monolithic and double-layered plates of 2A12 aluminum alloy are normally im-pacted by ogival-nosed projectiles with the help of a gas gun, the effect of layering and gap of plates on the ballistic resistance is revealed, and also the velocities of the projectiles are obtained from the photos of high-speed camera. Based on the experimental results, it indicates that the ballistic limit ve-locities of monolithic plates are higher than those of the double-layered plates, including in-contact and spaced double-layered plates, and also the ballistic limit velocities of in-contact double-layered plates are higher than those of spaced double-layered plates. The effect of the configuration of target on the ballistic resistance decreases with the increase of velocity of projectile. Moreover, numerical simulations of the impacts are conducted by using an explicit finite element code (ABAQUS), and also the results obtained from finite element simulations are compared with those of experiments. Good correlation is found between the two. that the numerical simulation can predict the ballistic limit velocity of target.
