Racking performance of sheathing sandwiched wood shear walls

Abstract

In order to evaluate the influence of different experimental variables on the racking performance of sheathing sandwiched wood shear walls, one monotonic test and seven reversed cyclic tests were carried out. Four typical experimental variables were considered, including wall length, stud spacing, sheathing thickness and nails spacing. The performance was evaluated and compared in terms of shear strength, lateral stiffness, ultimate displacement, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation. The results showed that the tensile fracture of end stud which appeared at the top of hold-down was the finial damage pattern of sheathing sandwiched wood shear walls. The sheathing thickness which determined the failure modes of nail connections on the edge frame had significant effects on the lateral stiffness and ultimate displacement of the walls. Appropriate decrease in nail spacing could increase the shear strength and lateral stiffness of the walls, but the nail spacing should be larger than 75/150 mm to avoid the splitting of top plate and bottom plate. Sheathing sandwiched shear walls exhibit excellent racking performance and can be applied in mid-rise timber buildings.
