Study on the vortex induced motion characteristics of tension leg platform based on model test

Abstract

In order to study vortex induced motions(VIM) of tension leg platform(TLP), the model test was carried out in the range of Reynolds number 2.5×103~2×104. The lock-in and two phase phenomena were caught by considering horizontal and vertical stiffness in the designed mooring program. The results show that both the transverse and in-line directions occured frequency-locking, and the transverse motion has the predominate position. In this Reynolds number range, the corresponding lock-in region in transverse direction is for Ur=4.0~7.0 and in-line direction is for Ur=6.0~7.0. The left force model satisfy strouhal relations under Ur≤4.0. While it is no longer suitable under Ur＞4.0. It is also revealed that the current incidences is the key factors influencing the motion trace. It has the ‘8-shaped’ track under 0°incidences, while in 15°incidences it has the ‘banana-shaped’, and the flat ‘8-shaped’ bending to the left in 45°incidences.
