Experiments and numerical prediction of a new separable phase yielding mild steel damper

Abstract

To compensate for the lack of existing mild steel dampers, we have improved the shape of energy dissipating steel sheets and the combination rules, a new shear bending combined stage yield mild steel damper was presented. The performance of the damper consists of shear energy dissipation components and bending energy dissipation components were analyzed by experiments and finite element simulation. The experimental results show that this damper possesses the stable hysteretic capacity and fatigue resistance capacity, so this stage yield mild steel damper has strong energy consumption capability and great damping effect, which achieved a two-stage energy-yielding mechanism. Numerical simulation is in good agreement with the experimental. This kind of damper has such advantages as obvious phased energy character, superior performance and simple structure. It can be designed by the method of module and assemble. The damper will have wide application prospect in future.
