Design of modal sensor for stepped beam based on PVDF array

Abstract

With an example of a clamped-clamped beam containing multiple steps, a new experimental approach is presented to design the modal sensors by using an array of PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) sensors. An array of rectangular segments of PVDF film equally attached on the surface of the beam is taken as sensor. First, an experimental modal analysis method was applied to obtain the curvature mode shapes directly. Then the measured curvature mode shape values are used as corresponding weighting coefficient of the output signals of PVDF films, so that the weighted combinations of the outputs to directly lead to the target modal coordinates. The experimental results show that PVDF array modal sensor have advantages of easier bonding on the surface of the stepped beam ,accurately and conveniently measuring experimental curvature modal, independence of position of the external excitation, good effect of modal filtering, etc.
