Meshless FEM-BEM Method to compute sound transfer function in enclosed spaces

Abstract

The finite element method(FEM) or boundary element method(BEM) is usually employed in the sound calculation of a cabin space at low frequency, but a single method can not satisfy the computing requirement of complex structures. These methods have some disadvantages such as pre-processing and smoothing processing. Aiming at these problems, this article attempts to combine the FEM and BEM into a hybrid algorithm, and then transform it into a meshless algorithm. It’s a new approach for the sound prediction problem in enclosed environment. At first, the combined meshless FEM-BEM model is derived, and then specific details which include the discretization method of differential equation, the construction of shape functions, the nodal disposal, and the integral computing scheme are described. Finally, numerical simulations and experiments are conducted to verify this method. The comparisons show that the results of the proposed method and SYSNOISE are nearly consistent. Experimental results show that the average relative error of sound pressure level for each position is less than 5.26%. These results show that the proposed method not only can be applicable to complex problem, but also has good computation accuracy.
