Comparing seismic responses of a layered site with fault fracture zone and a homogeneous site

Abstract

Here, the seismic response of a layered site with fault fracture zone was studied by using the finite element method in time domain, and the effects of a layered site and an equivalent homogeneous site on their seismic responses were analyzed comparatively. The effects of width, stiffness and inclined angle of fault fracture zone on seismic response were also analyzed. It was shown that the predominant periods of the layered site are shorter and the amplification of its seismic ground motion is larger compared with those of the equivalent homogeneous site; when there is a fault fracture zone in the layered site, the scattering effect of fault fracture zone on seismic wave may be stronger, and the maximum peak of vertical acceleration of the layered site is much larger than that of the equivalent homogeneous site; the effects of width, stiffness and inclined angle of fault fraction zone on seismic ground motion of the layered site are roughly consistent with those of the equivalent homogenous site; the difference is that the maximum peak of ground surface acceleration of the layered site is larger than that of the equivalent homogenous site, in addition, the first peak of the acceleration response spectrum of the layered site is similar to that of the equivalent homogenous site but the second peak of the former is larger than that of the latter, it is greatly affected by width and inclined angle of fault fracture zone.
