Abstract

In order to clear the key factors that affect the damping effects of tuned particle damper (TPD) and study the influence of the fine energy dissipative particles on the damping effects of tuned particle damper used in civil engineering, a 1/30-scale test model was designed and manufactured based on a reinforced concrete frame, and a tuned particle damper which can be used to reduce the vibration of the scaled model was designed. Based on the selected parameters of TPD, by adding different amounts of fine steel powders in the damper cavity, the variation of the damping effects of TPDs with and without fine particles were studied through shaking table tests. The results show that TPD with fine particles can decrease structural displacement response effectively under earthquake action. Excitation intensity is a critical factor influencing the control effect, the control effect increase with an increase in excitation intensity. The control effect of the TPD with fine steel powders tends to decrease compared with traditional TPDs without fine particles, tuning effect caused by the relative motion of particles is the main damping mechanism of TPDs in civil engineering.
