Study on Seismic Energy Responses of a Continuous Girder Bridge isolated by Friction Pendulum System

Abstract

Abstract: A 3D finite element analysis model of a continuous concrete girder bridge was established as an example. Under the excitations of three artificial earthquake waves, the energy responses of the non-isolated bridge and FPS isolated bridge were calculated using non-linear time history analysis method in longitudinal direction and the energy dissipation effects of three isolation schemes were compared. Furthermore, the effects of equivalent sliding radius and friction coefficient on the energy responses and the energy distributions were also investigated. The research results indicated that, for isolated bridge, most seismic energy was dissipated by FPS and the energy dissipation demand of bridge structure was decreased efficiently, and the effect of full isolation scheme was best one among three different isolation schemes. The energy dissipation efficiencies of FPS were enhanced and the structure energy dissipation demands were effectively decreased with the increments of both equivalent sliding radius and friction coefficient. But when the equivalent sliding radius and the friction coefficient were comparatively large, the enhancement of energy dissipation efficiency trend to be little.
