Abstract

Drop hammer impact test was carried out on concrete-filled double skin steel tubes to study the impact performance of this kind of composite structures under multiple transverse impacts. The deformation mechanism of the composite tubes was analyzed and the impact force-time history curves during each impact as well as the global and the local deformation data after each impact for the composite specimens were obtained. The experimental results show that the outer steel tube and its thickness influence significantly the impact resistance and the global bending deformation of the composite tube;the concrete layer restricts effectively the local deformation of the composite tube. Compared to traditional hollow steel tubes,concrete-filled double skin steel tubes demonstrate advanced impact performance with smaller global and local deformation but higher energy absorption capacity.
