Anti-blast performance of aluminum foam-core sandwich panels

Abstract

Aluminum foam core sandwich panels used as the blast resistant process excellent performance of energy absorption and also have advantages in strength and rigidity. Five different doses of explosives were applied to test the sandwich panels with the thickness of 10 cm,7 cm and 5 cm. For each panel,the deformation and failure under different explosive loading conditions were investigated. The process of deformation and failure were analyzed. The results show that aluminum foam core sandwich panels with the same thickness of steel plate consume energy mainly by local compression deformation and overall bending. To improve the anti-blast performance of sandwich panels,it is effective to increase the thickness of the foam core or strengthen the connection between the foam core and face sheets. The deformation of the sandwich panels will be smaller under explosive impact and it can also prevent the face sheets being detached from the foam core.
