Identification of Dynamic Properties of a Transmission Line Lattice Tower from Ambient Excitations

Abstract

Accurate determination of modal parameters is crucial to predict the dynamic responses of transmission towers due to wind and seismic excitation, in particular the damping ratio. In this study, the frequencies and damping ratios of an 85.5m-high transmission line tower are identified. Based on the field measured data, the acceleration is assumed to stationary. And the first cross-line mode, along-line mode and torsional mode are estimated by stochastic subspace identification (SSI) from the field testing data. The results indicate that: the damping ratio is slightly larger than 2% for the first cross-line mode and along-line mode and is about 1% for the first torsional mode; the frequencies and damping ratios have little connection with the small vibration amplitudes when the acceleration is not higher than 0.1m/s2, which are can be regarded as the structural damping inherent to the structure.
