Theoretical modeling of the milling force of C/C composites in ultrasonic milling

Abstract

The longitudinal ultrasonic vibration was applied in the axial direction of a flat end milling cutter, and the milling force of C/C composites during the ultrasonic milling process was analyzed. Considering the layered structure model of the C/C composite material and the geometrical model of the end mill, as well as the motion characteristics of the milling cutter rotation in milling process and based on the theory of bevel cutting，the milling force in the ultrasonic vibration assisted milling of C/C composite material was modeled in accordance with the theory of equivalent plane and twodimensional orthogonal cutting circle. The variation of the equivalent plane angle in ultrasonic milling was investigated. The milling force characteristics of the ultrasonic assisted milling of C/C composites in the experiments along with the change of cutter rotation angle were discussed by numerical simulations and experiments. The results show that the predicted milling forces are identical to the experimental milling forces in magnitude.
